How Did I Get Started In Sailing/Coaching: We lived near the water and decided to buy a boat. The boat came with a motor, oars and sails. I could not afford the fuel and was not keen on rowing it around so we read some books and taught ourselves how to sail. With starting coaching, I was asked to do some private coaching and the word spread. I then coached the National Youth team in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
Career Highlights: International 420 World Champions 1981; 18ft Skiff Worlds 1996 and 2000; Coaching medallists in every ISAF Youth World Championships attended.
Career Goals: To coach medallist at the Olympic Games and World Champions in Olympic Classes. To enjoy life whilst coaching.
Notes/Thoughts On Sailing: Fun…a great sport that is a thinking sport.
Best Things About Being A Coach: Working with extremely talented athletes. Having and gaining respect from these sailors.
Worst Things About Being A Coach: Rain, snow and no wind. Travelling so much.
Notes/Thoughts On Being A Coach: The coach and the sailors are a team and need to work and communicate together and have complete confidence in each other.
Words Of Advice: Keep it all simple and honest. Enjoy!
Anything You Would Like To Add: Sailing is fun…winning is twice as much fun!
